Havana to investigate 'symptoms' found on US Diplomats

The FBI is reportedly investigating who was behind an "acoustic attack" that inflicted at least two staffers of the U.S. Embassy in Havana with sudden hearing loss.vWashington expelled two Cuban diplomats earlier this year in response to the incident, the U.S. State Department said on Wednesday.

The State Department raised the incidents with the Cuban government over the course of several months and sent medical personnel to Havana, but have not been able to determine exactly what happened.

The State Department separately said in a statement that it had "reminded the Cuban government of its obligations under the Vienna Convention to protect our diplomats".

Canadian officials said no action would be taken in reprisal because the investigation is underway and there is no proof as yet Cuba is behind the incidents. On May 23rd, two Cuban diplomats were asked to leave the United States in an apparent response to American diplomats being forced to come home for medical reasons.

Relations between the United States and Cuba were restored by then USA president Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro in 2015 after a half-century break.

Congress wants more answers also and has been pushing for an updated briefing. When asked specifically what the incidents were, Nauert replied, "That's what we're calling it. There is a lot we still don't know".

The FBI is now investigating with Cuba's cooperation and they will allow FBI agents onto the island according to a U.S. government official.

Any other personnel who believe they have also been affected are being monitored and provided with medical care. "Initially, when they'd started reporting what I will just call symptoms, it took time to figure out what it was, and this is still ongoing".

Deepening the scale of the incident, the Canadian government said some of its personnel had experienced similar symptoms.

In an incident that could be straight out of a film thriller, agents are suspected of using sonic devices for acoustic assaults on USA diplomats in Havana, causing concussion-style injuries and severe hearing loss.

It was not immediately clear if Cuba was to blame - or another nation, officials told the network.

"Cuba is universally considered as a safe destination for both visitors and foreign diplomats, including Americans", the ministry said in the statement.

On Wednesday, officials confirmed that two Cuban diplomats were expelled from the United States embassy following an "incident" that, well, apparently involved a secret "sonic device" giving diplomats hearing loss?

Two staffers at the Cuban embassy in Washington were expelled in May, suggesting retaliation for a dark incident whose precise nature and details are still being investigated.

The Cuban government said it "has never permitted, nor will permit, that Cuban territory be used for any action against accredited diplomatic officials or their families, with no exception".

A statement from the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday categorically denied any Cuban involvement in the mistreatment of U.S. diplomats in Cuba, and said the decision to expel Cuban diplomats was "unjustified and unfounded".

"We are aware of unusual symptoms affecting Canadian and USA diplomatic personnel and their families in Havana", Brianne Maxwell, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, told Newsweek. In retaliation, the US kicked two Cuban diplomats out of the country.

The AP reports the symptoms were so bad that it affected work and shortened some diplomats' stay on the island.
