HTC Focus standalone VR headset splashes overseas

LG VR Headset

That unit is called HTC Vive Focus and was officially unveiled today.

The new wireless VR headset features an AMOLED display and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor. The headset features six degrees of freedom tracking, along with a three degree of freedom controller, similar to Samsung's GearVR. We know the Vive Focus will be available in China soon, but any additional markets HTC plans on launching the headset remain a mystery.

Some months back we heard talk of HTC planning to launch a standalone Vive VR headset, and at the time we also heard it would be a Chinese exclusive, at least initially. The best part of its device is that unlike the HTC Vive, the Vivo Focus doesn't need a smartphone or a PC to function and offer you an immersive experience.

HTC, however, has kept the other details of the Vive Focus under wraps, including its price and release date.

The company also announced Vive Wave, a VR open platform and tools for software and hardware developers created to provide an easy path for the production of mobile VR content for high-performance devices.

Instead, the Vive Focus has all the hardware it needs to power VR apps and games within the headset itself.

Alongside this announcement, HTC also unleashed its new VR development platform, which will be utilised by the Focus. The headset is designed with visual elements taken from the PlayStation VR and HTC's Vive Deluxe Audio Strap and has a bright blue colour profile.

HTC has over the past year dominated the VR market in China, with the HTC Vive taking an 82 percent share in the third quarter of this year.

Twelve hardware partners, including Quanta, Pimax, Nubia, and iQIYI, reportedly have pledged their support for the integration of Vive Wave into their future products.

HTC's standalone VR headset comes with "world-scale" tracking. Google hasn't exactly been seen as a serious player in the VR market, be it with its Cardboard VR nor with this new Daydream platform.

Unfortunately, the Vive Focus is only heading to China for now with no word on if and when it will come to the United Kingdom or US.
