Investment Companies & Investment Funds

When looking for reliable investment companies, some significant points should be accounted for. There are different terms and categories while dealing with the investment market. The major of them are investment companies and investment funds. Here are the principal differences and similarities between these two critical constituents in the investment world.

Investment companies are determined as financial institutions (frequently used as trust, corporation, or partnership) receiving a certain sum of money from individual investors and buying financial securities like bonds, stocks, precious metals, etc. They usually operate for long-term investment and are registered under the federal investment company Act of 1940. Investment companies generally offer investors various funds and such investment services as recordkeeping, custodial, portfolio management, etc. There are both private and public investment companies. And they provide investment products to the general public.

An investment fund is a pool of financial products (stocks, real estate, etc.) that belongs to a limited number of financially experienced investors. Mostly they are private that allows avoiding any reporting and obligations. Thus, it provides a wider variety of opportunities, more significant management expertise, and lower investment fees. Compared to investment companies, investment funds are often organized in offshore countries for marketing,  tax, and regulatory reasons.

Principal Funds Categories

Some types of funds processing unite both financial institutions. They are mutual funds, closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts.

1.Mutual funds

Mutual funds, known as open-end funds, are financial organizations selling a varying number of shares regularly. When investors credit money into the funds, they are offered new shares. Investors have a right to sell shares back to the mutual funds at the net asset value (NAV), which also fluctuates.

Mutual funds undertake different kinds of investment strategies. Bond funds, stock funds, index funds, and market money funds may also be organized as mutual funds.

2.Closed-end funds

Closed-end funds sell a certain number of shares in an initial public offering. It is sometimes related to an investment trust. According to closed-end funds, investors don’t sell their shares back to the funds. Instead, they participate in shares trade in a secondary market where the price can be higher or lower than the funds’ NAV. Many exchange-traded funds are closed-end funds.

Closed-end funds are more preferable fund organizations as they can invest in a more massive amount of securities than mutual funds.

3.Unit investment trusts

Unit investment trusts are also known as unit trusts because they sell securities that are called units. These units provide shares as a part of a public offering. Investors can redeem units upon request at their approximate NAV.

Therefore, investment companies profit by purchasing and selling shares, cash, bonds, property, and other assets or funds. The investment portfolio is usually created by an expert fund manager who searches for profitable niches to invest in.
